In remembrance of the last letter from the underground in Będzin
Edited: Yael Regev
The Będzin underground, active 1942-1943, united all youth movements and pursued saving Jews from the ghetto, getting hold of weapons and food, passing on information to the Polish underground and establishing a resistance force against the Nazis.
In response to a letter arriving from the Eretzyisrael representative, who was in Kushta – Istanbul - in Turkey, the underground representatives wrote a last letter. It left Będzin 17th July 1943, in which they wrote the following, among other things:
"After a long wait we received your letter only today, with fear and great joy. To our heart's regret it was a little late in arriving.
The Jewish settlement, the one, that has until recently been in relative good conditions, is the one in Upper Silesia East. But suddenly, three weeks ago 7000 Jews were deported from there and they are being shot to death and burnt in the Oświęcim- (Auschwitz).
Within the very near few weeks this region too will be free of Jews (Judenrhein). Upon receiving this letter, none of us will among the living.
