Dear Rina
I wanted to thank you for all of your help and cooperation with my family's travels with the Zaglembie trip to Poland. The trip was professionally planned and all accommodations were wonderful! May you have a Shana Tova. For the most part all of the programs and ceremonies were touching and meaningful. We certainly learned much of our families backgrounds and the horrific times that they endured (as if we did not know before). Looking forward to a continued involvement with the group.

Dear Rina,

I hope you are safely home by now.

I am writing to thank you so much for all you and your dedicated and hardworking team did to make this the trip of a lifetime for many us. You did a tremendous job organizing and leading the weeklong activities, programs, moving ceremonies, amazing lectures and walking tours that made the journey of retracing our families's footsteps so unforgettable and meaningful. It was a very intense and emotional time for all us, and having all our fellow Zaglembians there from all over the world made it bearable. There was an instant connection between us and no words were needed.

As you may know, I never wanted to visit Poland, but I am glad I joined the group with my sister and cousins to see where my parents grew up, how they lived, and how their families perished. The trip made it possible for me to find answers to many questions I had and to find closure. It was very special for me find the graves of family members who died before the war and to find and connect with new family members in Melbourne, thanks to our genealogists.

The Warsaw trip extension was the perfect way for me to end this intense journey. I very much enjoyed visiting this beautiful city and, above all, spending time at the Polin Museum. And the hotel was great.

Thank you for all your efforts and hard work in making this Commemorative Trip such a success! I hope you now have some time to relax and enjoy time with your family.

Please keep in touch and let me know the next time you come to New York.i

By the way, please share my email with the group.

Shalom and warm regards,
Hanna Feffer

Also, happy for you to give out my email / put it on lists for the Zaglembie people / distribution list.

Thanks,

Hi Rina,

I want to thank you again for the very significant you played in organising and leading the Zaglembie trip. Prior to arriving I had no idea what to expect, and was apprehensive about whether I would feel comfortable in a large group of strangers. Thanks to you and other participants I was very moved by finding very quickly that the things that connected us far outweighed all else. The detail, precision and thought that went into every aspect of planning the trip were remarkable, and in my opinion could not have been better. Of course, having David as our guide was a clear bonus.

Wishing you health and happiness.

Phillip Boltin

Dear Rina,
I hope you an uneventful return and that you are back in Israel
I have no words to express my gratitude and thanks for an amazing journey on all levels ..

Hi Rina,
I want to thank you and the other organizers of Zachor Zaglembie for making our trip such a memorable experience. Your hard work in planning the trip and tireless efforts during our time together made it an incredible learning experience from so many perspectives.

If you are sending out photos, participant names/addresses or anything else, please include me. As you asked us to email you, I have no problem sharing my info with participants.

With great appreciation,

Ruth Plawner Blumenfeld

When the opportunity came to travel to Poland, I was intrigued to say the least. I would walk in the footsteps of my ancestors, on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the liquidation of the ghettos in Będzin and Sosnowiec and the mass deportation of innocent people to their immediate deaths. In my mind, Będzin, which I wouldn’t have been able to place on a map, was a fairytale place. Little did I know, I wouldn’t have a lot of time with my grandparents; I would lose my grandmother shortly after my 9th birthday and my grandfather 7 years later. Like many survivors, my grandparents seldom spoke of the war. My grandmother purposefully lived her life selflessly devoted to her future generations, and my grandfather would spend most of his life waking up from night terrors. Every image in my head, from the few stories recounted from my father was like an old black and white silent movie; imagine Charlie Chaplin type music playing in the background. I was determined to piece together the details of a sparsely told story. I wanted to bring color to the black and white movie in my head. I needed to give my family, all tragically persecuted by the Nazis, and victims of the "final solution", a voice, from the past and for the future. These victims were my family members; cousins, great-grandparents, great-aunts, great-uncles and such. They were eliminated from this earth in the most cruel and inhumane way, all while the world stood by and watched in ignorance at best. Their legacies, stories of hope and bravery weren’t going away… at least not on my watch.

I encouraged my father to take this trip with me, and I'm truly glad he did. We both had never been to Poland before. Until technology like Google Streetview was available, we had never seen pictures before of our native town of Będzin. This was the opportunity of a lifetime. As many of our fellow delegates would agree, we would arrive in Kraków in late July, with no expectations and an innate desire for greater understanding. Roughly 250 people, both from, or with ancestry from the Zagłębie region of Poland arrived from the four corners of the world. While on the first night, some people here and there would recognize distant relatives, but most of us were strangers.

The strength of the unique fabric that is the Jewish Community around the world was ever so present. You could see connections being made and 'Jewish geography' being played. I could barely take 3 steps before hearing someone ask me “Where are you from” followed by “Oh, I have a cousin in Montreal, do you know him?”. Some of our fellow delegates who had been on a similar trip a few years prior, were eager to rediscover their roots with a fresh set of eyes, while others, first time visitors, were getting ready for an emotional journey back through time, to September 1, 1939 when the world came to a firm halt.

Throughout our journey, we would visit many memorial sites including cemeteries where many of our families were buried, many which in mass graves. We would assemble in the 'Umshlagplatz' in Będzin and Sosnowiec and march solemnly toward the train stations, waving Israeli flags and chanting well known songs written during the worst of times, with a dream about the best of times. We would march in the steps of our ancestors, escorted by local police and the highest officials of the local towns in support of remembering our past. We would stand together, hand in hand, staring down the endless railroad tracks that our families had viewed with fear and despair in their eyes. They doubtless comforted their crying children, with sometimes as little as an hour until they would cross over into eternity, their souls to be reunited with God. We would visit Aushwitz I and Aushwitz II (Birkenau), under a fitting thunder storm and were shown the poor living conditions and learned about how people were treated shamefully, as if they were subhuman: less than dust and turned into ash. We would pace back and forth along the “Judenrempe” trying to stop ourselves from thinking of all the images we had seen of chaos. We would stand in the place of the selections. Here was coined the phrase “and that’s the last time I would see my mother, father, sister, brother again.”

If you look back over what I just said, certain words should start to pop out: ”we”, “together”, “hand in hand”. True, this was about education, understanding our past, remembering those who fought for us and learning from survivors, who gave their eyewitness testimonies to educate us for generations to come. Even more so, all of the emotions we were all feeling: high, low, happy, sad, confused, conflicted and everything in between, were mitigated by the sense of community, the feeling of love and kindness and everyone's commitment to supporting one another. In a world where there is so much conflict, with nations fighting amongst themselves, we found peace and unity in the strong bond we built as a community; as a family. We got through all of this because we are a community and because we are genuinely committed to supporting one another. If anything, this would be the most significant part of this trip. My generation, the third generation, is the last generation who will have contact with survivors of the holocaust at a high level. The ones who survived are the proof of these atrocities and once the torch will be passed on, it will be up to my generation to have a clear picture and understanding of what our families went through. We are the voice of the past and without our commitment to our ancestors and our families, their memories turn to ash in the same way as the bodies of the victims themselves were destroyed by the Nazi murders. English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning said it best: “If we tried to sink the past beneath our feet, be sure the future would not stand”.

In Aushwitz II (Birkenau), better known as the factory of death, we celebrated life and the memory of those who's lives ended too soon. We gathered around the remains of the 4th crematorium, destroyed by the Sondercommando in the one and only act of rebellion recorded at Auschwitz, recited Kadish, lit memorial candles with survivors who shared with us what they experienced. The powerful words of survivor Esther Peterseil will forevermore be engraved in my mind. I never thought that I would feel such emotion after hearing someone speak about something so intangible and emotional, standing in the very place where they suffered for years. "We all wanted so desperately to live but here in Birkenau, we knew that tomorrow would not be better than today”…”We also had dreams, even here in Birkenau”…”those dreams kept us human. They reminded us that we’re better than those who tried to kill us”…”You our children and grandchildren; you were the ones we dreamed of when we were losing hope. We never thought this hell would ever end but we dreamed it would and would have you”…”do not ever forget whose children and grandchildren you are”.

When I looked around the room as I shared these thoughts and emotions at our farewell dinner in Warsaw, remembering these words, I understood that I was my grandparents dream come true. We were all dreamt of as part of a coping mechanism, and so now, it will be part of our legacy to share this dream with the next generations. The Third Reich tried so hard to make our ancestors disappear with hope that they would not be missed and would be easily forgotten. It would be shameful for future generations, the dream of those who survived and perished, to ever let the memory of a single, innocent human being whose life was brutally taken away at the hands of the Nazis, disappear.

Today, I am back on the other side of the world and have spent every moment, asleep and awake thinking about each moment on this journey. It’s hard to imagine going through life every day without residual thoughts. Moreover, I am grateful for everyone I have met and for all the relationships and connections I have built. Sometimes, we go through our lives not knowing something was ever missing until we come face to face with the one thing we never knew we were missing. I now can proudly say that my heritage means something important, and I can now proudly tell my story. The story of how I came to be on this earth, with gratitude and a heart full of love for my grandparents who risked everything for a dream. I will forever be grateful to my Dad who travelled with me on this incredible journey through time and to the leadership of the World Zaglembie Organization and the World Jewish Congress for their dedication in working together to make this experience unforgettable.
